Hello Kitty and Sanrio

We all know who Hello Kitty is (If you don’t then please see our previous blog), but where did she come from?

Well in March 1975 she came into being as a design on a vinyl coin purse produced by Sanrio, but who are they you ask?

Sanrio Co., Ltd. is a Japanese company that designs, licenses and produces products focusing on the kawaii (cute) segment of Japanese popular culture. Their products include stationery, school supplies, gifts and accessories that are sold worldwide and at specialty brand retail stores in Japan. Sanrio’s best-known character is Hello Kitty.

Sanrio was founded by Shintaro Tsuji as the Yamanashi Silk Company in 1960. In 1962, Tsuji expanded his enterprise from silk to rubber sandals with flowers painted on them. Tsuji noted the profits gained by simply adding a cute design to the sandals and hired cartoonists to design cute characters for his merchandise in response. In 1973 the company was officially established under the name “Sanrio”.

The company produces a line of character merchandise around gift-giving occasions. Hello Kitty was added to the lineup of early Sanrio characters in 1974 and the first related merchandise was released the following year. Other notably popular characters through the years have been:

The Little Twin Stars

My Melody

Tuxedo Sam

Wish Me Mell

Who is Hello Kitty?

For those of us who are not aware of Kitty, her family and friends, here you go 🙂

Who is Hello Kitty? Kitty was born on November 1st 1974, she is very energetic and loves to play outdoors, in the park or forest. But you can also find her happily practicing on the piano or baking a cake, too!

Hello Kitty symbolizes generosity, innocence, kindness and most importantly… friendship.

Her generosity and kindness endear her to everyone she meets. Her favorite thing is tea parties and her hobbies include music, reading, eating the cookies her mother bakes, and best of all making new friends. Like she says “You can never have too many friends.”

Hello Kitty’s Family & Friends : Kitty lives in London, England with her mother, Mary, dad, George, and twin sister Mimmy. Kitty is curious whereas Mimmy is shy.

Her friends are Cathy, Tippy, Joey, Jodie, Fifi, Tracy, Tiny Chum, Rory, Mory, Tim and Tommy. Both Kitty and Mimmy are in 3rd grade. They have many friends at school and, together, they share many adventures. When school’s out Kitty travels the world making new friends.

Hello Kitty Wine

To the casual viewer Hello Kitty is purely for children, comprising of toys, clothing and pocket money gifts. But there is another side to Kitty, the side that appeals to an older audience, where the sweet and kitsch imagery of Hello Kitty can be enjoyed like a soft comforting blanket.

So whereas it might seem strange to most people that there is Hello Kitty wine, I am sure there is a market eager to sample it.

There are currently 5 wines in the collection:

Hello Kitty Sparkling Rosè Special Edition – 750ml (Limited to 15000 bottles)

Hello Kitty Sweet Pink Sparkling Wine – 375ml

Hello Kitty Sparkling Rosè – 750ml

Hello Kitty Pinot Noir – 750ml

Hello Kitty Pinot Nero Vinified in White – 750ml

The Sweet Pink comes in a specially designed bottle and the Special Edition Rosè is limited to 15,000 numbered bottles.

Sadly this isn’t something we will be stocking at Dizzy Pink but for more information please follow the link:
